This makes sense, because you don’t want an organisation to provide your data to someone else who pretends being you. The GDPR does not say how organisations should verify your identity. Many mechanisms are possible, though the most privacy friendly option should be used. One way of verifying your identity is by asking for a copy of your ID. But often other, more privacy-friendly and secure options are available as well. This is particularly the case if your request relates to your data linked to an online account. In that event the organisation could, for example, send you a message through your account (or email) to verify it is really you who sent the request. If an organisation asks for a copy of your ID, always ask yourself whether this is necessary to verify your identity and whether there are better and more privacy-friendly alternatives available. If so, communicate this to the organisation. In cases where there are no good alternatives, your only available option may be a copy of your ID.	Ibland. A few general recommendations: - Remove/anonymise the information that is not necessary for the verification purpose: this is generally your photo, document number and citizen service number (social security number). - Mention on the copy the purpose and organisation for which it is intended (for example: ‘Purpose: Access Right; Organisation: Spotify’). - Mention on the copy the date of your request or the date you sent the copy. In some countries you may have certain tools that help you to create a more safe copy of your ID. In the Netherlands, for example, the Dutch government released an app [KopieID](https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/identiteitsfraude/vraag-en-antwoord/fraude-voorkomen-met-kopie-id-bewijs) for smartphones that makes it easy to create a more secure digital copy of your ID.
